Owl Cybersecurity: Bringing Light to the Darknet for Enterprise Organizations

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Recently, the terms ‘the darknet’ and ’the dark web’ have captured the public imagination as stories of nefarious and illicit activities happening in the dark corners of the internet fill news cycles. In fact, the terms have been around for many years, but are only now taking on renewed business relevance as organizations realize that they must take the cybersecurity battle beyond the walls of the enterprise.

According to Owl Cybersecurity, the darknet is “a network, built on top of the internet, that is purposefully hidden, …designed specifically for anonymity…[and] only accessible with special tools and software.” Within the darknet lie clues and indicators of enterprise security breaches, as hackers and other bad actors share and offer for sale their illicitly obtained goods.

As enterprise organizations step up their cybersecurity counter attacks, they are increasingly delving into the darknet in an effort to monitor activities that may point to unknown breaches, planned attacks or other impactful events. Finding this information in an intentionally obscured world, however, is a daunting challenge.

Owl Cybersecurity aims to make this process easier by creating what they claim to be the world’s largest database of darknet content. Their unique service extracts data from thousands of darknet sites each day, indexes them and makes the resulting information available to their subscribers. Providing numerous filtering functions, the service acts like a search engine for darknet content enabling subscribing enterprise organizations to quickly detect potentially compromised data and mitigate damage before impact.
