Vericlave: Offering Enterprises a Cloaking Device?

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

If you’re a Star Trek fan, you probably remember that the Klingons and Romulans both possessed a defensive technology that was problematic for the federation: a cloaking device. After all, it was pretty difficult to attack them if they were invisible. With the constant barrage of cybersecurity threats facing the modern enterprise, I’m sure that there are more than a few CISOs (not to mention CIOs and other business leaders) who have wistfully wished they had their own cloaking device that would make them invisible to would-be intruders. According to security company Vericlave, that’s precisely what it has developed.

The company uses a combination of proprietary and pre-configured hardware, software, encryption, and key management to offer enterprises a turn-key, plug-and-play way of creating secure connections between sites and technology assets. The company’s pre-configuration at the hardware level creates what it calls enclaves that, out-of-the-box, only respond to other known enclave members. The result ends up looking a lot like a Klingon cloaking device — your network simply disappears from view.

The company’s technology effectively creates a layer 2 bridged connection, a virtual wire, according to the company. On top of this virtual wire, organizations can then do standard layer 3 routing and even create traditional VPN tunnels within the already encrypted enclave. While the company initially focused on helping organizations secure operational technologies that organizations connected to IP-based networks and thus exposed to cyber threats, the company is now focusing on a broader set of enterprise use cases as organizations seek easier and more turnkey solutions for their most vulnerable data assets.
