Maana Update: Creating a Cognitive Digital Twin of the Enterprise

I have long been impressed with cognitive platform Maana. It’s not only that they have impressive technology, but also in how the company approaches its application. Since we last spoke with the company, it has evolved its solution in two important ways that are indicative of this approach.

First, the company has fully committed to delivering their platform as a cloud-based solution on the Microsoft Azure platform. According to company leadership, this strategic partnership enables them to unlock new architectural capabilities and enable greater development speed and interoperability.

Second, and most interestingly, the company has adopted the digital twin concept, in which organizations create digital representations of physical objects for testing, simulation, and diagnostic use cases, but are instead applying it to enterprise business processes at a cognitive level. This approach, in effect, enables the company to model critical processes such as supply chain management, drill management, fleet optimization, and so forth, and then create simulations of how these processes will behave under different scenarios.

The company takes what it calls a knowledge-first approach (rather than data-first) and applies this digital twin approach to deconstruct processes and create what it calls a digital knowledge layer. The result is both predictive and prescriptive capabilities, that according to the company, organizations can use to improve the quality and speed of business critical decisions.
