PagerDuty revisited: Red hot, real-time SRE response platform

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

PagerDuty fits in with any enterprise software platform or distributed computing environment where site reliability requirements call for notifications, work management and IT Operations collaboration.

They started out 10 years ago as a flexible alerting tool for server-room IT support teams to quickly jump on calls to jointly resolve issues. (Perhaps there were still some actual pagers in duty back then?)

Now, after a red-hot April 2019 IPO and flush with partner integrations and new customers, PagerDuty has made great market strides beyond the ITSM space by driving issue resolution into the DevOps tool chain.

The ‘real-time’ aspect of PagerDuty means it can act as an SRE dashboard, collecting issues from hundreds of reporting tool integrations, and automating notification and responses in sync with customer service and IT Ops management platforms from ServiceNow, AWS, MS Dynamics, Atlassian Jira and more.

PagerDuty maintains team availability awareness, scheduling meetings, launching instant concalls, SMS alerts and Slack chats — based on whatever preferred policies for IT support, collaboration and response management the enterprise sets — then reporting resolution cases and KPIs like MTTR back to systems of record.
