AtScale: Setting big data in motion by leaving it where it is

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

There’s always the next vendor with a tool for extracting and moving data from one repository to another. Then there’s AtScale, with software that seeks to break the data pipeline mold, replacing it with a way to semantically accelerate the use of active data sources without requiring the typical migration process.

Focusing on this virtual data enablement capability has made AtScale a partner to some big data warehouse and analytics players, as well as consultants charged with sorting out the data mess many of their large enterprise clients have gotten themselves into over time.

“We create one view of the enterprise data, irrespective of the vendor and technology platform,” says Chris Lynch, CEO of AtScale. “Other tools require you to transform and move the data, while we instead accelerate the use of live data connections for all functions.”

They call it a ‘Data Warehouse Virtualization’ solution which seemed a tad confusing to us, since the solution doesn’t closely resemble other kinds of data simulation or repository replacement tools on the market. Instead AtScale seems to interpret and directly attach to data sources, respecting permission and compliance settings down to the cell level, offering a rapid cache that reduces the cost overhead and routing time of queries.

That said, it is certainly possible this capability would aid an overall data migration process to support more modern cloud analytics and BI models, while respecting the heritage of existing data sources that won’t ride off into the sunset overnight.
