Semcon: Servicing the diverse needs of digital transformation

When you watch ten snowplows working the runways at the Oslo airport, you may not think about digital transformation, until you realize how their complex dance is synchronized. Each snowplow is autonomous, responding to weather conditions, avoiding delicate equipment, and observing the movement vectors of all vehicles on the tarmac.

Semcon is an international product development and process design firm that delivers this kind of end result, in partnership with other hardware, software and services firms. While they don’t fit the mold of a traditional enterprise technology vendor, they act as an impartial integrator for clients and bring a lot of their own software-style IP forward in each solution.

“We’re not just selling an Autonomous Snow Plow along with Husquvarna for an airport to allow as many as 45 employees to focus their efforts on higher value tasks, we are delivering a higher level of uptime as a service to that airport,” says Markus Granlund, CEO of Semcon. “Eighty percent of CEOs believe they will have to change business models every five years now, and balance their concept of products and services to orient themselves toward the customer.”

The company draws on a history of industrial product design, production and supply chain optimization, applying its own software and data layer to support each client transformation project, for instance, running AI/ML engines atop the material and parts content of various product design conceptualizations, sorting the data for relevance and calculating the production cost and long term maintenance(or services revenue) impact of each option.

Whether dealing with industrial production lines or shared commercial infrastructure such as airports and harbors, the impact of making the wrong technical, product and facility decisions can last for years. The ability to design toward a virtual ‘digital twin’ of real-world process knowledge can take a lot of the risk away.
