Okera Update: Taking Data Access Mainstream

An Intellyx BrainCandy Brief

Since we last spoke with Okera, the stakes around data management have only gotten higher. As the risks and rewards have increased, we’ve seen a commensurate increase in the number of vendors that are doing some component of data management in the form of catalogs, governance, and related functions. But few organizations take the holistic and integrated approach to data security and governance that Okera brings to the table.

The company’s original, founding insight was that to harness data as a strategic asset, organizations would need to find a way to dynamically locate, secure, and control it to create the data-driven agility that would create competitive advantage. As the criticality of data has increased since we last spoke with the company, the importance of this type of data access, security, and governance has increased exponentially with it.

While the company’s core platform and value proposition has remained unchanged — it still sits in the data path, acts as an intermediary between data consumers and sources, and effectively abstracts data compute and consumption from data storage — it is now applying greater intelligence to enable it to take advantage of innovation occurring at various parts of the data pipeline. As a result, the platform will now dynamically determine the highest performing data path that will meet governance and control requirements. The result is a highly tuned data management platform that enables organizations to simultaneously secure and govern their data without impacting either access or performance — and, in many cases, improving both.
