GitLab Update: The full-service open DevOps delicatessen

Most developers — and development companies — likely interact with GitLab in some capacity by now.

But if you’re not familiar with GitLab, you may be confused about its relationship to GitHub, the also wildly popular open source code repository (now owned by Microsoft).

Whereas you might think of GitHub as a giant salad bar containing code ingredients sourced from around the world, GitLab is more of a full-service ‘DevOps delicatessen’ for teams to trade tool chains and techniques, build menus to order, and process and deliver these ingredients as software.

“At GitLab, we’ve built upon an open approach to contributions that now provides a really good set of solutions for a whole array of DevOps functions,” says Brandon Jung, VP Alliances for GitLab. “In addition to package repositories, we provide issue tracking, agile development tools, Infrastructure-as-Code, monitoring and testing, even value stream management features for tracking software delivery to business outcomes.”

Indeed, the rate of innovation occurring at GitLab is hard to match, as they operate the business in a completely clear-box, public fashion that is as open as every line of code they support, and anyone inside or outside the company can contribute. As companies increase engagement with GitLab, they can opt for commercial-grade support and upgrades.
