CircleCI: Centered on developer experience from code commit to ship

CircleCI started out almost a decade ago as the first cloud-based build-validate-deploy service catering to the demanding IaC needs of born-on-the-web startup development teams. Now the solution is seeing much greater levels of adoption as those ‘cool dev kids’ return with larger teams and mature enterprise CI/CD needs in tow.

While the platform can be run on-premises for security or regulatory reasons, most of the 40M+ jobs CircleCI runs a month still happen on their managed cloud hub, as modern Hybrid IT and Cloud-Native application architectures continue to drive dependencies toward ephemeral cloud instances, remote services and distributed team collaboration.

Developers attach their repos, delivery platforms, cloud infrastructure providers, observability and collaboration tools to the CircleCI pipeline using pre-configured integration orbs. In-flight jobs then call for the rendering of specific environments from the pool of available compute services as a YAML file.

The platform’s popularity among developers may be a product of the company’s tight focus on improving build automation speed and visibility within the CI/CD pipeline, rather than expansion of the product to displace upstream or downstream tools.

“We try to provide an opinionated perspective on what customers need for success, without being prescriptive,” says CircleCI CEO Jim Rose. “You can use our orbs, or do it your own way. Software development is a multiplayer game — and most of the code in any project is borrowed and calling on third-party dependencies.”
