An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief
If there’s one thing that most enterprise organizations are pretty bad at, it’s learning from their experiences. Despite all the talk about continuous improvement, most organizations do little to actually improve in a structured, continual and sustainable way. The irony is that there are proven techniques for doing just that — they just don’t come from business. Growing up, my father had this “fun” routine of conducting what he called after action reviews of our family adventures. These reviews were drawn from his years as a SWAT team commander and are just what they sound like: a structured review after some action has been completed to determine what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve.
While I went on to adopt after action reviews as part of my personal management practice, it is not something that most managers or organizations understand, let alone practice. A company called Shamaym is trying to change that. Based on the founder’s years as an Israeli Air Force pilot, the company has created a learning platform that helps teams capture insights after key events or actions, document them in the form of post-activity briefs, and then use that data to drive continuous improvement and to provide automated briefs before similar events or activities.
The platform leverages AI to help teams collect the most salient data (something that can be difficult to master without guidance), and then to leverage that data to identify trends and insights that would otherwise go unnoticed. Moreover, the tool enables teams to handle the debriefing process individually or collectively, and to do so within their existing process flow engaging via email, Slack, Salesforce, and other similar engagement tools. Finally, the company is beginning to leverage natural language processing to mine contextual debrief data, along with structured data capture elements, to further uncover trends and insights that might otherwise fly under the radar. The company is reporting impressive KPI improvements by teams using its approach and it’s rumored that some teams are even taking to donning flight gear for their team meetings!
