Mattermost Update: Adding Project and Workflow Management to Create an Integrated, Developer-centric Collaboration Platform

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Every organization today seems to be after the same thing: organizational agility and market speed. That’s because it is now the ability to deliver powerful and differentiated experiences that drive business value — and experiential demands are in a constant state of change. According to Mattermost, however, what underpins all of this is an organization’s developers and R&D teams. If they can’t adapt and move at velocity, the thinking goes, then neither will the organization.

Mattermost has long focused on enabling developer communication through its open-source messaging platform. Today, however, it has raised the stakes with the announcement of two new platform components. According to the company, developers spend almost 40% of their time dealing with manual tasks, process management, and disconnected tools — rather than collaborating to move the organization forward. Therefore, it believes that to improve agility and deliver better experiences, organizations must reduce friction and increase collaboration for developers.

The company’s answer is the release of a new integrated, developer-centric platform that introduces project and workflow management into its existing messaging and communication platform. The resulting collaboration platform remains open source and can be deployed either on-prem or in the cloud. It brings together all elements of collaboration and communication, including “channels” for messaging and conferencing, “playbooks” for repeatable workflows and processes, and “boards” for Kanban-style task and project management — all built upon a set of developer-centric connections and controls. Its goal is to bring everything a development team needs to collaborate and deliver agility in a single platform.
