Calyptia: First-mile observability data filtering and routing

Calyptia offers a managed cloud service for collecting metrics and telemetry data at its node-level sources, so early observability operations can be shifted left to this ‘first mile’ before the data is filtered and routed to back end systems.

The most common current approach to observability and security data is ‘send all the logs and telemetry to our big cloud back-ends, and we’ll conduct high-powered searches and analytics atop it.’

Unfortunately, less than a quarter of that data is likely to be relevant, and especially in cloud native environments, the sheer volume of incoming data can make cloud storage costs balloon out of control, along with the time and processing overhead of interpreting the most important early signals from the noise.

Founded by creators and contributors to the widely used open source Fluent Bit and fluentd projects, Calyptia’s cloud service aggregates and enriches logs and metrics flowing from Kubernetes pods and other microservices nodes, so engineers can discover throughput issues and respond faster to potential failure indications.

Data can be further tagged and compacted from there to help reduce the cost impact when it lands in enterprise back ends and data lakes for further observability operations.
