Cobalt Iron’s Compass backup management system is delivered as a service, either as an appliance in the data center or as a virtual appliance in the cloud.
In either case, Cobalt Iron manages the Compass service as a secure, turnkey solution. They provide a single version of the software globally to all customers and update the software quarterly. They charge customers based on their consumption of the service.
They disable access to the backup software components, which improves the security of the system and protects against ransomware and other types of cyber attacks.
Cobalt Iron consultants work with customers to initially design, configure, and deploy a customized backup solution, either for a selected application or across the enterprise.
Quarterly reviews with the Cobalt Iron consultants anticipate any required changes or updates to the Compass configuration or capacity, such as an increase in application scope or increase in required storage. A self-managed storage option is available but requires customers to implement their own storage security controls.
Cobalt Iron places Compass within the context of the importance of backup to an organization’s business goals. They control the entire backup infrastructure, and provide a dashboard to monitor the effectiveness and cost of the solution, display analytics for the backed up data, and highlight any potential risks.
