Tavus: Uncannily human AI conversational avatars

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Tavus new logoTavus provides a conversational AI modeling platform for building avatars or ‘clones’ that mimic human behavior over video or voice calls in an interview or customer service role, responding to both verbal and non-verbal cues with context and sub-second response times.

Instead of producing high-IQ chatbots, they allow customers to bring their own LLMs, and focus much of their research on delivering high-EQ (emotional quotient) conversational partners that can both read and mimic cues like facial expressions and vocal intonation as well as the empathic valence of words. Avatars can be pulled from a library, or visually replicated from a human user in a low-code fashion via an interview or video, with legal controls to prevent unauthorized deepfakes.

There’s an SDK for attaching specialized knowledge bases and guardrails which can limit conversations to the task or subject at hand, for instance, a healthcare intake avatar that wouldn’t talk about politics. Developers can invoke an avatar service via API, and simply call a chatbot much like embedding a video or ‘start a meeting’ link into an app or webpage.
