Gremlin: Strategic Reliability Testing and Engineering

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

When we first covered Gremlin in 2017, as Jason Bloomberg noted, IT managers were wary of introducing “chaos” in production code to improve reliability.

During the past eight years, however, Gremlin has been raising the focus level of their platform from “chaos” to the broader concept of “reliability management,” as reflected in our coverage in 2023

They continue to release features and functions that help an organization develop and manage a comprehensive reliability strategy, with clear accountability and responsibility, similar to the way in which a security tool vendor supports an organization’s overall security strategy.

Just “pulling plugs” and crashing systems to observe what happened and fix the issues isn’t enough for an organization to continuously maintain and improve application and system reliability.

They need visibility across a broader array of reliability risks, many of which Gremlin diagnoses and quantifies, and assistance in comprehensive reliability risk remediation.

Gremlin helps frame the problem space, create a solution approach, and develop the methodology for a successful reliability program.

Gremlin also analyzes network traffic to discover application dependencies, helps identify which tests to run, and uses AI to analyze and summarize the results, and to generate recommendations for risk remediation.

Also new is support for the Istio service mesh, an on-prem version, and the ability to run a large set of tests to verify a Continuity Of Business (COB) failover test, from which they generate a COB validation report to share with regulators.
