NETINT: VPUs for sustainable video (and AI) streaming at scale

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

NETINT logo Intellyx BCNobody wants lame old CPUs anymore. And it seems like we can never get enough GPUs to feed our insatiable hunger for AI processing power. Rising demand and limited supply have driven prices up.

You might also think these overpriced, power-guzzling GPUs were still considered the best at processing graphics and video. Think again; they reserve only 15 percent of their capacity for processing graphics and playing videos, and the bulk of the processor is now reserved for inference and other mathematical functions such as cryptography.

NETINT architected their novel VPUs (video processing units) to meet the specific needs of processing and streaming video and interactive games at massive scale in a compact form factor that uses a fraction of the power of other processor formats.

Just one of their entry-level priced Quadra T1U units can encode 32 concurrent 1080p HD live video streams, or decode and serve 48 HD streams while only drawing 17 watts. When stacked, they can offer a huge reduction in total operating expense, whether you are operating an over-the-web multi-channel streaming service, or downsampling security video feeds from hundreds or thousands of in-store or public cameras. Put 10 T1U’s in a 1RU server, and you can encode 320 HD channels, 80 4K channels, or a whopping 20 8K streams.

As it turns out, there is also a great story for AI here, as the technology can also provide hardware acceleration for deploying encapsulated AI inference models too. Zip zam!
