LocalStack: When a local dev cloud is better than the real cloud

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief from Kubecon NA 2025

If you know me, you know I’m always in favor of ‘fake it till you make it’ approaches to the SDLC. That’s why it’s always nice to find a solution that simulates the real thing better than the real thing.

LocalStack develops and maintains an open source local cloud emulator, giving developers a local instance of an AWS account or other cloud backplane to point their configurations at, including a variety of APIs to replicate managed services such as databases, streaming, networking, observability and security tools.

As you might guess from 400 million dockerimage downloads and counting, the project has become extremely popular among AWS developers who want to spin up a free local cloud from their IDEs, as well as now, automated development co-pilots and deployment agents who will also need to run integration tests with a sandbox application stack in a safe environment.

Companies who want to add enterprise support and more custom or bespoke API integrations can sign up for the commercial offering.
