Speedscale: Ready-to-serve K8s developer environments

Hi, I’m Jason English, Director and Principal Analyst at Intellyx, here with a Brain Candy Video Brief. We’ve covered Speedscale a few times since they appeared on our radar in 2021.

Since then, this Kubernetes-native startup has modernized the notion of service virtualization that was popularized in the 2010s to offer ephemeral developer environments based on production traffic that can scale on-demand in cloud instances or run locally on the developer’s workstation.

As cloud native development has drastically increased the frequency, complexity and change rate of software releases, companies are having a harder time than ever wrangling realistic pre-production environments to work in.

By the time an environment is specified, built, populated with test data and commissioned in a CI/CD pipeline, it’s usually already obsolete. Further, these non-prod environments are usually left running, consuming costs well past their expiration date as developers don’t want to interfere with each other’s work.

Speedscale has built an environment management system for performance and functional testing of everything “outside the bubble” of a development team’s own feature or service under development – so, every incoming user action or machine request, API connection, or back-end call.

So, it’s not exactly an observability solution, but its dashboard does show you the topology and performance of the ephemeral dev environments in the context of other observability tools. It’s not a RUM solution per se, but it does replay actual user traffic while adjusting load profiles. It’s not a test data management solution, but it does simulate valid traffic with privacy-obfuscated user data.

The firm demonstrated several customers who are launching and decommissioning hundred-thousand-user-session tests within each pull request, with a lean system footprint.
