Coder provisions remote development environments with policy-driven governance controls for managing AI-assisted development work and coding agent workloads inside a secure deployment of the organization’s preferred application delivery and deployment stack.
Platform engineering practices already popularized the provisioning of self-service remote development environments, often housed on the developer’s laptop. While the introduction of AI coding agents into the mix might increase developer productivity, the inference and propagation time for each prompted change and commit cycle can also introduce a frustrating amount of lag time into the developer’s workflow, as well as the unintended consequences of code exposure when agents interact with other services and tools and share data autonomously.
Coder’s Terraform-defined environments allow teams to specify and bring their own coding assistants, OS, IDE, repo, CI/CD pipelines and deployment endpoints, whether applications are delivered into a cloud hyperscaler or airgapped for compliance reasons. By letting engineers corral AI agent coding reviews and commits closest to where the code is stored and run, agent response times, potentially risky data transports and prompt exploits, and GPU / token resource consumption costs are reduced.
Though these ephemeral environments are unopinionated, there are “pre-plumbed” tool kits to support popular use cases, such as replacing clunky Citrix VDIs, or provisioning Python SDK and Jupyter notebooks for model training and machine learning jobs.
