Jazz: Smoother-than-prevention data protection layer

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Jazz security logo IntellyxThe problem with DLP (data loss prevention) isn’t really about technology, as it is a mature product category. it’s apparently about user experience.

According to Jazz, conventional DLP solutions can protect data, but at best stymie employees who are just trying to do their job. At worst, the policies are too hard to configure and generate too many false positives, so DLP ends up getting bypassed.

Jazz is attempting to overcome the company culture resistance to breaking down data protection silos, by introducing an AI-guided DLP concierge called “Melody” and a DLP observability layer that understands context and workflow for enterprise data down to the user’s business intent and endpoint.

In addition to the single-pane-of-glass dashboard you’d expect for admins to track policies and risk exposure, the system captures contextual information and business intent to help stakeholders compose and improve policy guardrails through conversational means. Melody’s lighter touch includes inline education for employees that help them understand why a given resource access or sharing action might be blocked, with alternative suggestions to ease adoption.

Intellyx hot take: They built a fun multi-modal campaign for what looks like a political movement around “DLP Sucks” which includes a digital graffitti wall and fun merchandise for SecOps professionals and sysadmins who can vent their frustration in exchange for “DLPesos” fake money.

Intellyx cold take: Risk-averse companies who see DLP as a purely preventative exercise are unlikely to consider new ideas in that arena until they experience a major data exfiltration. That is why a user-experience oriented approach can appeal to the company’s desire for employee productivity, agility due to less alert noise and roadblocks, and encouraging top-line growth.
