An Intellyx Brain Candy Update
Cobalt provides an offensive security platform that helps security red teams orchestrate automated pentests and continuous autonomous agent-based testing of applications, networks, and cloud infrastructure.
Since my last coverage of Cobalt in 2025, while the firm still offers turnkey pentesting services with 500+ “Cobalt Core” testers on staff to help customers find vulnerabilities, they have built out new continuous and AI testing capabilities within a reusable platform that security teams can use.
Enterprises and MSSPs can enter their testable target assets, bringing their own LLM provider, data sources and existing automated pentest suites, and then human experts build a strategic plan and knowledge base within the platform to align a cadence of recurring tests with the ever-moving targets of high-risk attack vectors. Findings and issues that require further attention can be shared with downstream SIEM and ITSM platforms for triage and remediation.
Intellyx hot take: Setting the goals and intent of an enterprise-wide pentest is no small undertaking, so Cobalt’s origin story as a services firm is important because human security awareness of emerging threats and judgement of results should be a requirement of setting the goals and guardrails for safely applying any form of offensive AI and triaging issues with a deep knowledge base.
Intellyx cold take: I used to recommend that product vendors need to make a clean break from their existing services practices, but in this case I’m starting to see the value of having active, expert personnel managing pentesting work for customers to truly exercise the potential of their own platform. Besides, product-led growth is actually not ideal for every niche.
