Forbes contributor Jason Bloomberg felt that the Fiber Mountain launch was the pinnacle of excitement at this year’s Interop conference in New York City. Fiber Mountain is an interesting inclusion here. Their central tenet of using photonic switching as an interconnect to create programmable cross-connects is exciting. That being said, they aren’t the first in the space to believe that a mix of optics in the datacenter is powerful. Plexxi got out of the gates with this vision a while ago, along with application abstraction (what determines the paths if not the application requirements?) and automation (integrating dynamic pathing with other systems is powerful). I don’t normally comment in such self-serving ways, but this one just struck too close to home. Declaring Fiber Mountain the winner seems a bit premature when there are other racers who were out of the gates first. Game on.
