Jason Bloomberg has just delivered another insightful analysis, this time of Melvin Conway’s “Law” that,
Any organization that designs a system will inevitably produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization’s communication structure.
Having said there was a need for a causal explanation, Bloomberg says he will deliver one soon, but in the meantime I thought I would offer one that builds on Leroy and Simons’ observation that, “Dysfunctional organizations tend to create dysfunctional applications.”
I’m not sure why that observation should be surprising. Surely one would expect a dysfunctional organization to create dysfunctional applications – how could they do otherwise, other than by being incredibly lucky? The underlying question Why? still remains.
