Most organizations have historically focused their cybersecurity efforts on external threats. Increasingly, however, organizations are coming to terms with the fact that the insider threat is at least as great.
The problem with most insider threat solutions is that they take a one-dimensional approach to the problem. Rather than focusing only on the digital footprint, RedOwl offers a solution that looks at physical data (e.g. badge swipes), unstructured communications and HR data, in addition to traditional digital threat indicators. Their use of natural language processing (NLP) to read PDFs of HR and other reports is unique.
From this holistic viewpoint, they trend anomalous behavior and create a narrative — similar to an event dossier — that helps security analysts understand the true nature of the threat. They deliver their solution with a set of pre-packaged analytic models that look for specific scenarios (e.g. workplace violence) to enable organizations to rapidly put their solution to work. Overall, it’s an interesting approach that helps organizations to manage against the potential of insider threats.
