Redwood Software: The Next Generation of Robotic Business Process Automation

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

While still quite nascent, the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) movement is already beginning to run into limitations. RPA utilizes software “robots” to simulate user activity and automate mundane business process tasks. Its early promise was evident, but like many other script-based approaches, RPA becomes increasingly fragile and requires significant maintenance as organizations attempt to scale its adoption.

Redwood Software takes a different approach. Rather than simulating user interaction, they automate entire back-office business processes directly using APIs, algorithms and other direct interactions, only relying on user simulation as a last resort. The difference in results, they claim, prove the superiority of their approach. According to their analysis, typical RPA implementations achieve between 15% and 30% productivity improvement. Using their process-based approach, they say that they can eliminate 80-100% of all manual process interactions.

Moreover, because they deconstruct complex business rules and logic rather than merely simulating user interactions, their automation is much more resilient and can intelligently handle process exceptions. Their aim, they say, is not to take out people and put in robots, but instead to take the robot out of the person and free them to do meaningful and more important work for the organization.
