If you’ve seen Randy Bias speak at a conference, you’ll come away with the impression first, that he knows more about cloud computing than just about anyone else on this planet, and second, his threshold for nonsense is quite low. You’re sure to get an unvarnished opinion from Bias.
As with many of the digital influencers in this series, Bias took to technology in high school. As a teenager, he spent his free time learning SCO Xenix, a Unix variant, and set up a network for his friends.
It wasn’t long until he had managed to log into servers at the nearby University of California at Santa Cruz. “Access to UCSC servers was not entirely legal,” Bias confesses – but the opportunity put him in the room with college students and provided access to the early, pre-web Internet.
At 19 he scored his first job as a system administrator, based solely on his self-taught Xenix skills. He dove into on-the-job learning with no time for college.
Then in 1992, he happened to catch an episode of Good Morning America that featured two stories on the Internet, cluing him in early on its importance. He realized he needed to become a network engineer to capitalize on the Internet.
