Test.io: Closing the Last Mile Gap in Continuous Deployment Testing

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Technology companies like Facebook, Netflix and Google have shown the world that you can successfully deploy updates to critical, customer-facing applications on a continuous basis. Enterprise organizations have received the message and are moving rapidly to adopt practices such as DevOps and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deliver (CI/CD) to keep pace. But there is a secret weapon that these technology companies have when it comes to ensuring the quality of these continuous deployments: human testers.

While these industry leading technology companies embed test automation into their CI/CD pipelines, they also do limited releases to both their employees and small sets of customers to test the user experience, scalability and platform compatibility (particularly in mobile) before full distribution — a tactic that is rarely available to enterprise organizations. And as customer-centric enterprise applications take on ever-greater importance in the customer experience and in new revenue models, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Test.io enables enterprise organizations to close this gap. They have amassed a global army of human testers that development teams can “call” via an API and embed into their pipelines. Test.io focuses on testing customer-facing applications and helps enterprise organizations ensure that their applications are ready for prime time.

One of the primary use cases is in the testing of the customer experience. Whereas automated testing can often tell you if something doesn’t work as intended, it can’t tell you if people actually like it. Using an exploratory testing process, the company helps organizations get valuable feedback on the user experience before release. The company’s human testers can also be used to do boundary, negative and user story testing, as well as testing scalability and platform compatibility.
