swarmOS: Visually Connecting Strategic Objectives to Software Projects

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Connecting an organization’s strategic objectives to the specific business and software projects that support them has been a problem since the very beginning of the IT function. But the challenges and implications have increased exponentially in the age of continuous delivery and digital transformation.

Launched at the Atlassian Summit 2017, swarmOS helps organizations simply and visually connect these dots. The swarmOS solution is comprised of three Jira add-ons: Foundation, Analyzer, and Cockpit. Foundation is a Jira project wizard that creates one of three project types: strategic, business or software, with pre-defined workflows and settings.

Analyzer is essentially a visualization engine for Jira projects. It dynamically pulls project data from Jira and enables organizations to visually explore relationships, constraints, and blockages. Moreover, its extensive filtering capabilities enable organizations to visualize specific projects, look across projects from a role or resource perspective or view only projects that meet specific criteria.

Cockpit enables business or management users to see a high-level view of all projects in a simplified dashboard. It provides instant visualization of escalations, milestone status, dependencies, change in scope, capacity constraints, running cost estimates and even project satisfaction levels. While Analyzer can analyze any Jira dataset, the company’s solution is most powerful when organizations leverage Analyzer in combination with Cockpit and Foundation-based projects that establish the macro relationships between strategic objectives and underlying business and software projects.
