Alfresco has its roots in Enterprise Content Management (ECM). Its Digital Business Platform combines traditional ECM with integrated Business Process Management (BPM), while providing rigorous governance capabilities of particular interest to heavily regulated industries.
Alfresco’s core technology is open source, and the company’s business model centers on a traditional enterprise offering that includes greater scalability and management than its community edition.
In addition, Alfresco follows an open API approach that makes the platform straightforward to embed in larger applications that require ECM, BPM, and governance services.
Alfresco has also optimized the Digital Business Platform to run on Amazon AWS, taking advantage of S3 storage and offering a prebuilt Amazon Machine Image (AMI) template for simple deployment in the cloud.
