AllyO: Using AI to Transform New Hire Recruiting

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Despite all of the talk about digital transformation, when it comes to the process of hiring people for most jobs, you could argue that nothing has really changed since the days of lining up outside the factory personnel office. Sure, there are now online applications and job boards (to wit, an innovation from the 1990’s), but the fundamental process is the same: see a job availability announcement, submit a long and laborious application filled with seemingly irrelevant information, and then wait — probably forever, as you’ll likely never hear anything else.

On the employer side, it isn’t much better. Post a job and then spend tens or (more likely) hundreds of hours filtering, screening, scheduling interviews, and otherwise communicating with potential candidates. This inefficient and ineffective process also creates a horrible employee experience at the beginning of the employee’s journey with their new employer. Upstart AllyO has set out to turn this process on its end.

Using a combination of various forms of artificial intelligence (AI), including natural language processing (NLP), the company creates an automated, conversational approach to recruitment and new employee hiring. A candidate expresses interest in a job by texting a code to the company’s platform. The system then initiates a text-based conversation with the candidate, collects applicant information, and performs screening, filtering and even assessments via the conversational interface. It then schedules interviews for qualified candidates and handles the offer and on-boarding process for successful candidates. The company claims that it reduces the cost and time to hire by 50-60%, helps companies attract more qualified candidates, and creates a much better candidate experience.
