AppDynamics is one of the unquestionable leaders in the application performance management (APM) market sector. It has long been in the business of helping enterprise organizations monitor and manage their most critical applications. But the company is recognizing that the landscape is changing. As the technology stack continues to grow in complexity and scale, it believes that this complexity is leaving IT organizations will much less control and visibility. The result is a need to monitor and manage using an approach that spans the stack. But this scale and complexity also make it almost impossible for human operators to do so.
The company’s answer? Adopt what it calls the AIOps mindset and create the Central Nervous System for IT. The company sees this as a vision for AIOps that brings together its traditional application management strengths with the infrastructure focus of Cisco, which acquired the company a couple of years ago and operates it as an independent subsidiary. The vision behind the Central Nervous System for IT is to create “a platform that delivers deep, cross-domain visibility and insights with the ability to automate actions, reduce the amount of time-consuming IT tasks, and enable teams to drive innovation.”
At the center of this vision are two core elements: application-centricity and AI-powered insights. The company continues to believe that applications — and their connection to the business processes they support — are the essential management paradigm that must power IT organizations. But it also recognizes that the traditional approaches to APM were not always sufficient. It, therefore, combines what it calls its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) Integration, which provides “an integrated view from the application code to the underlying network to ensure better application performance and user experience,” with its cognition engine to automate anomaly detection, root-cause analysis, and workflows across the complex, heterogeneous environments that are the reality for modern enterprises.
