Mattermost Update: Doubling Down on the Intersection of Collaboration and Control

When we last spoke to Mattermost about a year and a half ago, its message was that its platform was an open source collaboration tool built for the enterprise — with all the security and scale that implies.

The company has remained steadfast to this commitment and is aggressively positioning itself as the Slack alternative for organizations that require the security, scale, and control of their often critical and sensitive communications. According to the company, Slack and other SaaS collaboration tools may be convenient, but they lack these essential control elements — particularly when organizations use them in situations that require high degrees of trust, privacy or regulatory oversight.

Central to the company’s approach are two architectural elements. The first is the fact that the platform is open-sourced and leverages an open data model. These design choices give enterprises the ability to closely integrate the platform into workflows and with custom legacy systems. Second, organizations can deploy the platform on-premises, within their own virtual private clouds (VPCs) or in a hybrid configuration. The combination, according to the company, gives enterprises the best of both worlds: a deeply integrated collaboration platform, but with complete security and control.
