Moogsoft: Using Its Purpose-built Algorithms to Tame IT Operational Complexity

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

If you ask the leaders at Moogsoft about the state of IT operations, you’ll likely hear two things in response. First, they’ll tell you that it’s is growing ever-more complex and that this complexity shows no signs of abating. Second, they’ll say that not only do organizations, therefore, need to adopt intelligent solutions to respond to this increasing complexity, but that off-the-shelf algorithms will not be sufficient to address the unique complexity of the IT operations management problem.

The company believes that in the drive to digitally transform themselves for the digital era, enterprises and their IT systems have become increasingly complex across four dimensions. First, they have become much more modular, built as loosely coupled components. Second, they’ve become more distributed, composed of elements often dispersed across multiple geographies and management domains. Third, they have become significantly more dynamic in which their underlying topologies are no longer static, nor consistent. Finally, they’ve become much more ephemeral having shorter lifespans that can now last for as little as hours, minutes or even seconds. This complexity, according to the company, has made it almost impossible for any human to manage it effectively.

As a result, the company — like many in the industry — believe that the only hope for IT Operations teams is to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to identify patterns, detect operational anomalies, and make the flood of data coming from the technology stack intelligible. The company, however, doesn’t believe that the off-the-shelf algorithms that most in the industry leverage are sufficient to deal with the dynamic and ephemeral nature of the modern technology stack. It has, therefore, created its own purpose-built algorithms and other IP (such as topology graphs and IP focused on causal analysis) that it claims enables organizations to more effectively manage their environment, create a unified management workflow, and establish a collaborative environment that allows them to cope with the complexities of the modern operating environment.
