Imagga: The image-conscious AI/ML service

An Intellyx BrainCandy Brief

Imagga offers an image recognition service that allows applications to rapidly see, interpret and categorize images with increasing accuracy over time.

Starting out a few years ago as a tool for cataloguing and manipulating (i.e. cropping, resizing and correcting) large sets of stock images, Imagga came out with its first visual search and image tagging services in 2014.

Developers can use their API to call on a managed or locally installed app that increases in specialization as its machine learning routine is trained on a corpus of existing and new customer images.

Thus, a botany application may get really effective at distinguishing between different types of plants, while another learns how to better categorize architectural features, rooms and quality factors for real estate purposes.

“These kinds of visual recognition capabilities may seem exotic to most companies,” said Imagga CEO Georgi Kadrev. “Anywhere you have a customization problem in meeting customer preferences and demand with intelligent image recommendations at scale, we can allow teams to service that need without increasing team sizes.”

The company is also positioning the technology for automatic moderation of user-generated images such as NSFW nudes or copyright-protected materials in forums and social networks. We did not have time to review a demo of that particular capability.
