An Intellyx BrainCandy Brief
The speed at which new startups can offer a fully-featured platform by standing on the shoulders of giant open source R&D efforts these days never ceases to amaze. Render is one of the latest early-stage emergent platforms leveraging containers to fill this void for app developers seeking to focus on functionality and stop worrying about the infrastructure, wherever it lives.
As cloud service providers, CDNs, Infrastructure-as-Code, Docker containers, microservices and then Kubernetes orchestration arose in popularity, development simplicity started becoming harder to come by. Startups wanting to offer a secure app ready to deploy and scale in these new architectures demanded experts on hand who could remain vigilant of updates, vulnerabilities and potential performance glitches based on the infrastructure decisions they made.
“Developers don’t want to manage infrastructure or herd servers, they want to make better performing applications,” says Render CEO and Founder Anurag Goel.
Render’s goal is to make every app service teams may want (Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, Cron jobs, databases like MySQL and MongoDB, and even a CMS like WordPress) available as a discoverable named service that can run from YAML or auto-deploy (say, from DockerHub or GitHub) upon selection, and remain tuned and patched for performance and security over time, even if the app scales and leverages newer services or hybrid IT infrastructure down the road.
There’s not a ‘freemium’ or free Render site or app hosting service at the moment either. That is by design, as the firm seeks to incentivize with lower entry and expansion costs for paying early customers rather than subsidizing free ones. However, in addition to paying customers, several open source projects are also leveraging Render hosting for free, showing a return of goodwill to the massive innovation that went before.
