Hybrid cloud. Hybrid multicloud. Hybrid IT. These terms are becoming part of our standard infrastructure lexicon, but what’s the real difference between them? Although they’re not interchangeable, they are closely related to one another. Hybrid cloud typically refers to orchestrating services across public clouds and on-premises data centers. Hybrid multicloud takes into account the complexity that most companies find themselves facing—with applications and data working seamlessly across multiple clouds and data centers to deliver the best user experience.
So, what then is hybrid IT? According to Jason Bloomberg, founder and president of digital transformation analyst firm Intellyx, it’s a combination of on-premises IT assets with public and private cloud environments, representing a workload-centric approach to managing diverse IT assets across the enterprise.
That definition might be a mouthful, but understanding how to implement and use hybrid IT is a critical task in today’s multicloud world. In his white paper Extend the Cloud to the Data Center with Hybrid IT, Bloomberg states that “there must be a single architectural strategy that unites the various cloud and on-premises options in order to support coherent governance and security, while simultaneously focusing on the diverse, dynamic needs of the workloads such enterprises must run.” This strategy can help organizations like yours deliver a hybrid multicloud experience. And it starts with careful consideration of technology solutions.
