An Intellyx BrainCandy Brief
Everyone is rushing to the cloud. Story over. Case closed. The cloud is the future. Everything else is a relic of the past.
Well, that’s what you might expect if you listen to all the hype and hyperbole in the industry. The reality in most enterprise data centers, however, tells a very different story. Challenges and limitations surrounding things like data gravity (the difficulty in moving large amounts of data), compliance, and security have all conspired to leave the vast majority of enterprise data ensconced in the on-premises data center. This isn’t to say that many enterprises aren’t trying to move more of their data to the cloud — just that for the foreseeable future, their reality will be a hybrid one in which data lives both on-prem and in the cloud.
While there are many vendors still catering to the traditional data warehouse models, and others focused exclusively on cloud-based approaches, Yellowbrick is firmly focused on the hybrid middle, where most enterprises are now operating. Yellowbrick’s approach, however, is not hybrid merely in the sense that it supports both on-prem and cloud deployments, but rather in that it creates what it calls a hybrid cloud data warehouse that simultaneously lives in both environments.
Its solution enables organizations to deploy an identical data warehouse platform in both environments and to connect to a single data warehouse via multiple public cloud instances. Moreover, the company’s solution leverages open source technology to eliminate vendor lock-in risk. The company claims to have the best cost-performance ratio when compared to either traditional or cloud-only approaches, which makes it well suited for cloud migration, disaster recovery, data replication, and many other use cases.
