Turbot: Governing fair DevOps team play in the hybrid cloud league

TurbotAn Intellyx BrainCandy Brief

If teams of developers were to form some kind of sports league in the cloud, then Turbot would represent the commissioner’s rulebook and home office review for governing the fair play of that federation.

Turbot’s service offering creates a central point of control for governing app development, delivery activities and user access across software-defined infrastructure resources in AWS, GCP, Azure and various private cloud-like or SaaS accounts.

If managing the unique delivery pipelines and self-service provisioning contexts of multiple enterprise teams working across heterogeneous hybrid IT environments sounds rather complicated, well, nobody said this would be easy.

That’s where the ‘league office’ aspect of governance comes in: teams need to be able to call their own plays on desired dev/test tooling and deployment processes and innovate competitively, while commissioners put certain guardrails in place to ensure best practices are followed for the security and sustainability of all.

Turbot offers a central control interface that manages policies, permissions and component inventories across all these resources, but their underlying governance tool is 100 percent API-driven. This allows managers to either enforce tight control, specific tooling and access, or simply monitor or alert on the activity of any aspect of the hybrid IT delivery estate.

So Turbot could either enrich an existing CMDB with current configuration data from managed live accounts, or actively jump in to block an unauthorized configuration change that would cause a regulatory failure. There’s a lot more to it than that of course, but I don’t want to step out of bounds.

[By the way Turbot (the company) is pronounced tur-BOT, not TUR-buht (like the fish) or TUR-bow (like an engine).]
