Asana: A Work Management Platform Closing a Gap for the Enterprise

An Intellyx BrainCandy Brief

There is little argument that for organizations to compete and thrive in the Digital Era, collaboration amongst their teams will be vital. Yet, despite all the hype and talk over the years (including countless collaboration apps), a gap has remained. According to Asana, authentic collaboration demands three things: content, communication, and coordination. While many tools have addressed the content (Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, etc.) and communication (Slack, Teams, Zoom, etc.) side of things, the industry has done little to address the broad coordination that organizations require in a time of shortening cycles and rapid change.

While on the surface the company’s platform may appear to be a traditional task or project management tool, the company, instead, calls itself a work management platform. This word choice is to signify its broad applicability, its ability to scale across the entirety of an enterprise, and the fact that it can automate workflows and the management of work. As anyone who has ever tried to orchestrate the diverse set of work types, models, and workflows across a large organization can tell you, however, those simple-sounding ideas can be challenging to realize. The platform’s secret sauce is its data model, which was purpose-built to meet these needs.

This data model is what allows users to interact with their data, tasks, and workflows in any number of ways, while also giving managers and executives the ability to abstract the data at differing levels of granularity — on the fly and without significant overhead or burden on those doing the work. And while the company is not talking much about the so-called Future of Work and things like self-management models, its ability to dynamically abstract the data and recombine it in different ways — again, powered by its data model — makes it a perfect tool to support these types of initiatives to reimagine work and reinvent organizations.
