Hailo: Small, low-power chip design for high-performance AI

Hailo - Intellyx BC logoAn Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Chips are just a means to the endpoint for Hailo, a startup that is delivering highly performant, rugged, power-efficient miniaturized chips for making AI-driven inferences on edge devices.

Edge AI scenarios such as automotive navigation, rapid factory inspection, medical robotics and video surveillance involve taking in and processing very large volumes of data and imagery. The need for fast reaction times and accurate automated responses at the edge means waiting on a round trip to a cloud-based server or AI neural network would be insufficiently slow.

The Hailo chip’s processor compiles incoming user-trained data streams into its own miniaturized form of neural network, delivering performance comparable to other leading AI device chips, but in a form factor as much as 15x smaller with 20x less power consumption (Note: not benchmarked by Intellyx — see Hailo’s site for design specifications/claims).

This reduced power requirement will be key as AI-enabled devices proliferate remotely ‘off the wire’ where battery and alternative power generation methods become useful. Further, reduced heat dissipation requirements make Hailo chips ideal for rugged external operating conditions and mobile application scenarios.
