Upbound: Opening the runway for K8s control plane liftoff

Upbound logoUpbound offers enterprise-grade support and services for the increasingly popular Crossplane open source management control plane for Kubernetes.

Crossplane’s declarative API allows teams to specify what containers and pods to pull from config, yes, but its real utility lies in policy-based controls to define every abstracted aspect of a distributed Kubernetes environment: cloud instances, networking, databases, webhooks, serverless functions, VMs, and so on.

Leading cloud services and CI/CD vendors have signed on as certified Crossplane providers, in order to support a common AI for self-service templates and hands-free scaling, respawning and buildout of instances across hybrid IT destination infrastructures.

While Upbound’s founders have a strong contributor stake in the upbringing of Crossplane, they don’t pilot this control plane alone — it is being collaborated on and promoted entirely through the CNCF community. Whether customers subscribe to their service or go it alone, the company’s goal is to educate and assist companies in operationalizing Kubernetes with Crossplane at enterprise scale, without vendor lock-in.
