Lightbend Introduces Akka Serverless to bring Stateful Apps to the World of Serverless

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

We have previously covered Lightbend in August 2017 and March 2020.

Developers love the idea of serverless infrastructure. The promise of building and deploying apps without concern for the underlying infrastructure makes it easier for them to develop their applications quickly and adapt them over time. But there’s been one big problem in the world of serverless: it really only worked with stateless applications. The unfortunate consequence of that fact meant that developers could not leverage serverless for some of their most critical applications becomes they typically demanded a stateful, high performance, and scalable environment.

Lightbend believes it has a way to close this gap with the release of its new Akka Serverless solution. The company, long-known for its Akka platform, which is focused on helping development teams build and deploy demanding cloud-native applications and data streaming pipelines, has worked to remove the limitations of functions-as-a-service (FaaS) by enabling stateful services on a serverless infrastructure.

Built on its own Akka platform, the company claims that this new solution will offer developers a wide range of benefits. According to the company, they include allowing developers to use tools and languages they already know (beyond just Java and Scala) and the abstraction of the database layer eliminating the need to understand database schemas or functionality, all while taking advantage of serverless ease-of-use. Akka Serverless is now available in open beta.
