Lightbend: Extending Akka to the Edge

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

We last spoke with Lightbend in June, 2021

Lightbend now supports the popular Akka actor-based platform for edge computing. Akka support is available across cloud, data center, distributed clusters, and edge data centers (and for devices soon).

Akka’s common actor-based programming model runs programs designed for the edge across all supported platforms, seamlessly linking code and data from the cloud and/or distributed clusters to the edge and back.

Running an Akka message broker in the cloud extends an application to the edge using brokerless pub/sub in a near edge distributed cluster and on an edge point of presence. A polyglot WASM assembly prototype will soon extend Akka to edge devices as well.

The actor-based model supports high levels of scalability with a low footprint, reliably transferring data to and from the edge at low latency.

Lightbend provides commercial support for Akka, now including Akka Edge.
