Cosmonic: Composing a futuristic portable WebAssembly architecture

Cosmonic Intellyx BC logoAn Intellyx BrainCandy Brief

Cosmonic was at KubeCon 2022 in Detroit last week demonstrating the open source WASMcloud platform which reduces WebAssembly (or WASM) workload deployments to their smallest possible footprint while taking advantage of any-edge portability.

WASM is a relatively new open computing paradigm designed to maximize portability, abstracting application architecture requirements into tiny, hot swappable resources. This allows work to be distributed across most browsers, infrastructures or devices, in order to take advantage of higher performance local compute resources wherever they are available.

There are some truly astronomical-looking efficiencies of scale and deployment speed to be gained here, but it’s a lot more fun to think how WASM could be used to quickly design and implement new greenfield applications in ways we haven’t even thought of.

The firm was also making waves at the conference with an announcement of Docker’s support for encapsulating WASM in containers, which opens the box for even more portability options in the future.
