An Intellyx Brain Candy Update
Cockroach Labs is positioning their CockroachDB product as the category leader for Distributed SQL databases.
A Distributed SQL database combines the scalability and reliability of a NoSQL database with the transactional consistency of a traditional relational database.
Before distributed SQL databases were invented, you had to choose between a traditional relational database and a NoSQL database, depending on your requirements for cloud native scalability or transactional consistency.
When we last covered CockroachDB in April, 2020 they talked about how CockroachDB represents a next generation SQL database because of its cloud scale scalability and reliability, while preserving transactional consistency.
Since then the Distributed SQL category has been established, with several other vendors entering the market with databases that offer similar capabilities.
CockroachLabs are now focused on continuing to enhance CockroachDB’s capabilities to meet the requirements for high performance, high volume, modern enterprise online transaction processing (OLTP) applications in the cloud or in the data center.
