Chroma is an open source vector database designed to store embeddings for developers building LLM based AI applications.
Management’s current focus is on increasing adoption by improving the developer experience for design work, API consumption, performance, and documentation.
They plan to release a hosted commercial version next year, offer enterprise support packages, and are evaluating various ideas for commercial product extensions.
The Chroma database stores embeddings and their metadata, embeds documents and queries, and provides tools to search embeddings.
Chroma currently supports Python and JavaScript Other languages are supported by open source community members.
Chroma integrates the database within an overall generational AI ecosystem, including tools that generate embeddings from text, images, and other types of data and tools for creating embedding functions.
