Varnish Software: Private Content Delivery Network Based on Open-Source Cache

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Varnish Software may be best known for its open-source Varnish Cache, but its commercial product is its content delivery network (CDN).

Unlike competing cloud-based CDNs, Varnish offers a private CDN that telcos and large content providers can deploy in-house.

The Varnish CDN includes streaming video server capabilities and runs on various compute platforms, including bare metal, containers, and private Kubernetes clusters, as well as public clouds.

The Varnish CDN architecture optimizes the utilization of server CPUs, shifting the bottleneck to the network interface card (NIC). As a result, customers can improve CDN performance by upgrading their NICs, thus extending the lifetime of their servers.
