An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief
ORCA Computing engineers and builds quantum computers using the photonics quantum modality (i.e. photonic, or light based qubits), which operate at room temperature.
Their modular systems eliminate duplicative components through multiplexing: reducing cost, complexity, and noise (i.e. reducing loss of photons).
ORCA’s systems are designed to be easily upgraded because quantum computing technology is evolving rapidly. Their roadmap anticipates the “tipping point” (i.e. when quantum surpasses classic computing) to occur in about 18-24 months. They plan to take their customers on that journey, helping them become “quantum ready” in the meantime.
Their primary target is meeting the requirements of high performance computing (HPC) applications, although the “killer app” has yet to emerge that will drive general adoption of quantum computing. ORCA systems integrate with “classic” computer systems using bi-directional APIs to support mixed workloads.
Initial target HPC markets include optimization of biofuel development, manufacturing processes, simulation, and logistics as well as generative modeling and advanced encryption.
ORCA was spun out of the University of Oxford in 2019 to commercialize more than 30 years of research by co-founder Professor Ian Walmsley, and offers a unique, practical and flexible approach to quantum computing with multiplexing and modularity.
They plan to ship ten of the upgradeable systems by the end of 2024. ORCA offers consulting services to help their customers adopt quantum computing, integrate them with their existing classic computing systems, and prepare for future upgrades.
