Cockroach Labs: Data Replication with Transactional Consistency

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

The last time we wrote about Cockroach Labs it was about their leadership position as a Distributed SQL database.

At Roachfest24 last week, Cockroach Labs announced two major new features: physical cluster replication (PCR) and logical cluster replication (LCR) – both of which replicate data from one database to another, while preserving transactional consistency.

PCR copies a database from one cluster to another in real time, for example to create a backup copy of the database on another public cloud to resume processing in the case of a public cloud provider outage. LCR selects tables in a database to replicate to another database, and vice versa (replication can be bi-directional), for example to replicate local database updates to a remote database.

Cockroach Labs also announced a new cloud hosted product called Standard, which they said provides a good combination of features and price for most customers.

JP Morgan Chase, Estee Lauder, Starburst, and City Storage Systems described their CockroachDB applications at Roachfest24.

Transaction processing (TP) applications such as the ones they described require real time transactional consistency to maintain the state of a business, regardless of any type of computer failure, outage, or error, all while handling hundreds of thousands of concurrent updates across distributed cloud provider and/or hybrid deployments.

Preserving transactional consistency requires significant engineering rigor as well as increasing the load on computing and networking resources, especially when the application is highly distributed.

CockroachDB engineers solve these and other challenging requirements for distributed applications. For example, Estee Lauder said they use CockroachDB as a global database and were able to tune their database ecosystem to achieve required latency levels while maintaining real time transactional consistency.

CockroachDB runs in any cloud, data center, or hybrid. It can be deployed globally using multiple clusters that sync with each other, and configured for autoscale, high performance, and resilience. It can be hosted by Cockroach Labs or deployed within an organization’s infrastructure.
