Oteligence: Upstream Optimization of Open Telemetry Instrumentation

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Observability telemetry, including logs, traces, metrics, and events, comes in a mishmash of different proprietary, verbose formats. The open source OpenTelemetry (OTel) observability framework seeks to standardize such telemetry to support vendor-neutral instrumentation.

Despite the open source project’s best intentions, OTel-formatted telemetry still tends to be overly verbose, leading to high ingress and other observability costs. In addition, the standard doesn’t resolve semantic ambiguities that further compound OTel overhead.

There are several data pipeline offerings on the market that help resolve these issues by filtering and transforming OTel telemetry between its source systems and the observability platforms that consume it.

Oteligence takes a different approach. Oteligence optimizes the OTel instrumentation at design time – upstream of the pipelines and observability tools.

The company provides a platform that developers use to resolve OTel’s verbosity and ambiguity challenges in code, before the systems generate the telemetry in the first place.

Essentially, Oteligence solves OTel challenges at the source rather than applying Band-Aids to problematic telemetry.

Results include reduced observability costs, scalable telemetry infrastructure, and dynamic OTel support as source systems grow and transform.

Oteligence currently works with Java applications, with other languages and frameworks on the roadmap.
